History of Secondary Highway 505:
Secondary Highway 505 was a local highway in the County of Victoria that served as an access road from Highway 46 (later known as Highway 48) near Kirkfield northerly
to the small communities of Victoria Road and Uphill. The proposed route of Highway 505 was first depicted on a Preliminary Route Plan prepared by the Department of
Highways of Ontario (DHO) in May 1956. The proposed route followed the Victoria Road, a 19th-Century Colonization Road which was built to open up settlement in the
northern part of Victoria County. The Victoria Road was designated as Secondary Highway 505 by virtue of an Order-in-Council, effective May 9, 1956. The new highway
was approximately 12 miles (19 km) in length. At the time of the route's designation in 1956, Highway 505 was paved from the Highway 46 Junction northerly to Victoria
Road. The balance of the highway from Victoria Road to Uphill was gravel-surfaced. The highway was first shown with a completely paved surface on the 1977 Edition of
the Ontario Official Road Map. The route of Highway 505 remained more or less unchanged until the 1990s, when jurisdiction over the entire highway was transferred from the province to the County of Victoria, effective January 1, 1998. Victoria County initially renamed Highway 505 as County Road 35, but the highway was renamed again once the City of Kawartha Lakes was created out of Victoria County's amalgamation in 2001. Today, Former Highway 505 is known as Kawartha Lakes Road 35. Unless posted otherwise, the speed limit on Highway 505 is 80 km/h (50 mph). There are no services located along Highway 505, but they are available nearby along Highway 48 east of Kirkfield. |
