History of Secondary Highway 582:

Secondary Highway 582 is a local highway in the District of Thunder Bay that provides access from Highway 11 & Highway 17 to the small community of Hurkett, located between Nipigon and Thunder Bay. The proposed route of Highway 582 via the Hurkett Loop Road was first depicted on a Preliminary Route Plan prepared by the Department of Highways of Ontario (DHO) in April, 1956. The highway was designated by an Order-in-Council dated May 9, 1956. Highway 582 was initially gravel-surfaced at the time of designation, but was paved in its entirety in 1960. The highway's route has not changed appreciably since the time of the highway's designation in the 1950s. There are no services available on this highway.
