History of Secondary Highway 584A:
Secondary Highway 584A was a local highway in the District of Thunder Bay that once provided a second entrance to Geraldton from Highway 11. This road was actually
a former alignment of the Nipigon-Geraldton Highway (Highway 11), prior to the highway's extension and completion between Geraldton and Hearst during the 1940s. This
unusual bypassed highway loop appears as Highway 584A in various Department of Highways' documents throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. It also apparently had a
7000-Series highway number assigned to it (Highway 7139), which suggests that the highway may not have actually been marked with any Highway 584A route markers. The
last reference to Highway 584A was in the DHO mileage logs for 1970, after which time the route ceased to appear under that number. However, provincial jurisdiction
over Highway 584A (Highway 7139) remained in place until March 31, 1997, when the highway was transferred in its entirety to the Town of Geraldton. Today, former
Highway 584A is known as Old Arena Road.
