History of King's Highway 96A:
King's Highway 96A was a short spur highway on Wolfe Island which connected Highway 96 to the Dawson Point Ferry Dock. The ferry dock at Dawson Point provided a
connection between Kingston and Wolfe Island during the winter months, when the main ferry dock on Wolfe Island in Marysville was not usable. The history of
Highway 96A dates back to the mid-1960s, when a Preliminary Assumption Plan was prepared by the Department of Highways of Ontario (DHO) dated January 8, 1965, which
showed the proposed assumption of the Dawson Point Road as a new King's Highway. This new highway was initially identified as Highway 96A in DHO documents from the
1960s. The DHO assumed jurisdiction and control over the highway, effective January 18, 1965.
It is not certain if Highway 96A was ever actually signed as a King's Highway. The route was also assigned a 7000-series highway number (Highway 7051) beginning in
the 1960s, so it is entirely possible that it did not have a posted King's Highway route number for the majority of its roughly 30-year existence - if at all. In more
recent years, a small green fingerboard guide sign has existed along Highway 96 at the turn-off to Dawson Point east of Marysville, which pointed the way towards the
winter ferry dock via "Hwy 7051". The highway lasted until the late 1990s, when it was transferred to local control along with Wolfe Island's other two highways
(Highway 95 & Highway 96). Jurisdiction over Highway 96A/Highway 7051 was transferred from the province to the Township of Frontenac Islands, effective January 1,
1998.
