When this section of Hwy 401 was first constructed in the 1950s, the Hwy 19 Interchange was a full cloverleaf. In the early 1990s, Hwy 401 was widened to six lanes and the full cloverleaf interchange at Hwy 19 was converted into a diamond interchange. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Right - Guide sign marking the Hwy 19 Interchange on Westbound Hwy 401 in Ingersoll. This interchange marks the current northern terminus of Hwy 19. Until the northern section of Hwy 19 was downloaded to Oxford and Perth Counties in 1997-1998, Hwy 19 continued north from Hwy 401 for over 90 km, passing through Ingersoll and Stratford. The section of former Hwy 19 lying north of Hwy 401 was renumbered as County Road 119, since Oxford County already had a County Road 19 designated in their county road system at the time Hwy 19 was transferred to them.

Left - Aerial view of the Hwy 401 and Oxford Road 6 (Foldens Line) Interchange between Ingersoll and Woodstock, facing south. This is a relatively new interchange on Hwy 401. Prior to 1980, there were no ramps connecting Foldens Line to Hwy 401. The ramps at this interchange have always been in a diamond configuration, ever since the interchange was first constructed here in 1980. A 3.2 km portion of Foldens Line lying north of Hwy 401 was also temporarily designated as a provincial highway, with an unposted numerical designation of Hwy 7169. However, this highway was later transferred to Oxford County.

Left - The trendy design of the Hwy 401 Service Centres proved to be short-lived. While they were visually appealing from the exterior, the rounded outer walls created a rather inefficient indoor space. As traffic volumes on Hwy 401 grew, the service centres got progressively busier and the demand for indoor space became more pronounced. This triggered extensive reconfiguration of the building layouts of many of Ontario's Service Centres between the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. In fact, three service centres were levelled entirely and completely rebuilt during this time. The Woodstock Service Centre was among the last to retain its original 1960s design features.

Right - Over the years, millions of motorists were able to eat in the "Flying Saucer" dining rooms of Ontario's Service Centres. Although stylish for the time, the 1960s-era design of the Woodstock Service Centre is now glaringly obvious.

Left - When it opened in 1963, the Woodstock Service Centre on Eastbound Hwy 401 offered 24-hour emergency towing services and a repair garage. By the 1980s, the repair garage was closed and only fuel was sold at the gas pumps. The repair garage at the back of the Woodstock Service Centre has only been used for storage in recent decades.

Right - The reconstruction of the Hwy 401 Service Centres led to the introduction of special yellow signs on Hwy 401, directing motorists to exit the freeway to access 24-hour gas stations and restaurants while the Hwy 401 Service Centres were being rebuilt.

Right - Aerial view of the Hwy 401 and Hwy 403 Interchange in Woodstock, facing east. From this point, eastbound traffic heading towards Toronto can either use Hwy 401 via Kitchener-Waterloo or Hwy 403 via Hamilton. The two freeways join together again in Mississauga, immediately west of Toronto's Pearson Airport. The route offered by Hwy 401 is a slightly shorter distance than the route offered by Hwy 403. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Motorists who wish to proceed in the opposing directions can utilize the adjacent Hwy 59 Interchange to turn around. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Right - The Hwy 2 and Hwy 401 Cloverleaf is particularly interesting, as it is situated at the junction of two divided highways. Despite the large number of full cloverleaf interchanges built on Ontario's early freeways, there were few instances where two divided highways actually met at such an interchange.

Left - The Hwy 2 Underpass on Hwy 401 is one of the most impressive structures on the highway west of Toronto. For several years, Hwy 401 ended at this interchange. The London-Woodstock section of Hwy 401 was completed in 1957, but the Woodstock-Kitchener section was not completed until 1961. Until this section of Hwy 401 was completed in 1961, eastbound traffic had to use Hwy 2 via Brantford and Hamilton to reach Toronto.

Left - View of the eastern half of the Hwy 2 Cloverleaf on Hwy 401 in Woodstock. While the construction of cloverleaf interchanges is strongly discouraged today, the example found at Hwy 2 and Hwy 401 worked remarkably well due to the low traffic volumes on Hwy 2. Nevertheless, the MTO reconstructed this interchange in 2006-2007. This reconstruction project removed yet another example of this quickly-disappearing interchange design from the province's landscape. See an Enlarged Photo here.
