Left - Hwy 26 comes to an end at the parking lot at Barkerville. This interesting 19th Century gold mining town has been preserved as a BC Historical Heritage Park and a National Historic Site. The park entrance is located about 85 km east of Quesnel. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Right - Front Street in Barkerville is lined with numerous historic buildings which date from the frenzied Cariboo Gold Rush of the 1860s. The town's muddy, rain-soaked streets and wooden sidewalks probably look quite similar to how early gold prospectors would have experienced it back in the 1860s. Barkerville's streets are not open to motorized vehicle traffic, so town visitors must walk in from the parking lot on Hwy 26. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Above - The brightly-painted Masonic Hall (built in 1869) really stands out against the green mountainside in the background. The historic town of Barkerville is nestled in a narrow valley between two mountains. The townsite is only two blocks wide, but is about half a kilometre long. If you like history and the wild frontier mining towns of the Old West, Barkerville is well worth the detour from Hwy 97. See an Enlarged Photo Here.
