History of King's Highway 131 (#1):
King's Highway 131 was a temporary designation assigned to the Harbour Expressway in Thunder Bay during its construction in the 1970s. This highway ran from the
Thunder Bay Expressway (Highway 11 & Highway 17) easterly into the port district of Thunder Bay, where it ended at Highway 11B and Highway 17B. The route was
completed and opened to traffic in 1979, and jurisdiction was later transferred from the province to the City of Thunder Bay, effective June 26, 1981. While this
route was officially known as Highway 131, it is quite possible that this was in fact an unposted route number. The highway also appears as an unposted 7000-series
route (Highway 7154) in some historical Ministry of Transportation records. A different, unrelated
Highway 131 existed in Barrie between 1984 and 1998.
