Right - This tranquil setting seems quite fitting for a pair of "ghost" highway bridges. Almost 60 years have passed since Hwy 11 traffic last crossed over these bridges. In 1948, the South River Bypass opened, making the two bridges on Isabella Street redundant.

Left - This quiet residential street in South River is rich in history. It may seem hard to believe today, but Isabella Street in South River was once a vital provincial highway corridor. However, clues can still be found about the road's past importance to those who take the time to look. For example, note the superelevated curve in the background, which was obviously designed to move fast through traffic.

Left - There is nearly 80 years of highway history shown in this photo. The abandoned 1930s alignment of the Ferguson Highway is visible in the foreground, while the newer 1940s South River Bypass joins in from the left. The new four-lane section of Hwy 11 between South River and Trout Creek, which was opened in 2005, can be seen in the background off to the right.

Right - This old section of Hwy 11 was abandoned in 1948, when the South River Bypass was completed. Unfortunately, the northernmost part of the old 1930s highway will be torn up as a result of the proposed four-lane highway between South River Hill and Burk's Falls.

Left - Despite being bypassed nearly 60 years ago, this abandoned twin-slab concrete section of Hwy 11 has preserved remarkably well. The old road can be accessed from Isabella Street in South River.

Right - The abandoned Hwy 11 alignment north of South River is one of Ontario's most interesting abandoned highways. The road was concrete surfaced, which has largely prevented the forest from regenerating and breaking up the old pavement. Consequently, the old road is still in good condition overall.

Left - The abandoned Hwy 11 alignment at South River continues for 5 km through the woods. Note the old concrete slabs visible along the old highway centreline. The concrete slabs were laid on this section of Hwy 11 in 1937, and the slabs were overlaid with a thin coat of bituminous prime in the mid-1940s.

Right - This section of Hwy 11 on the South River Hill was bypassed in 2005 and is now closed off to through traffic. It is still in use as a service road to several adjacent properties.
