Left - Southbound Hwy 404 facing south from the Van Horne Avenue Overpass in Toronto. See an
Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on August 19, 2009 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lane on Southbound Hwy 404. This recently-completed HOV lane allows carpool and public transit vehicles to bypass the congested section of Hwy 404 approaching the Hwy 401 & Don Valley Parkway Interchange. A special HOV Tunnel was constructed below the Don Valley Parkway ramps, in order to allow vehicles in the HOV lane direct access to Westbound Hwy 401. Vehicles wishing to continue south along the Don Valley Parkway or use Eastbound Hwy 401 must depart from the HOV lane into the general purpose lanes in order to exit from Hwy 404. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on August 19, 2009 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - Northbound Hwy 404 at the Van Horne Avenue Overpass in Toronto, facing south. Most of Hwy 404 through Toronto was constructed below-grade in an earth
cut, in an effort to attenuate highway noise and minimize the construction footprint of the overpasses. The slopes beside the highway give some clues as to how high
the original ground line was above the highway's finished grade. A substantial amount of earth had to be excavated and removed in order to construct the highway. The
freeway was constructed with curb-and-gutter along the outer lanes, since all roadway drainage had to be contained within the earth cut without the use of roadside
drainage ditches. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on August 19, 2009 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Van Horne Avenue Overpass on Hwy 404 in Toronto. Structure completed in 1976. (Photograph taken on August 19, 2009 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Facing north along Hwy 404 from the Van Horne Avenue Overpass in Toronto. In recent years, the southern terminus of Hwy 404 has become one of the
Greater Toronto Area's most serious traffic bottlenecks, where all access ramps to Hwy 401 are only a single lane. See an
Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on August 19, 2009 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Van Horne Avenue Overpass on Hwy 404 in Toronto, facing east. (Photograph taken on August 19, 2009 - © Cameron Bevers)

(Photograph taken on August 19, 2009 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Northbound Hwy 404 at the McNicoll Avenue Overpass in Toronto, facing north. A service road follows Hwy 404 from Finch Avenue northerly to the McNicoll Avenue area. The McNicoll Avenue Overpass spans the service road (Gordon Baker Road) as well as Hwy 404. Left - Southbound Hwy 404 at the McNicoll Avenue Overpass in Toronto, facing north. When this section of Hwy 404 was first constructed in the 1970s, it was
built along an existing road's right-of-way (Woodbine Avenue). The section of Woodbine Avenue between Sheppard Avenue and Steeles Avenue was reconstructed as a
freeway, tying into the existing Hwy 401 & Don Valley Parkway Interchange just south of Sheppard Avenue. See an
Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on August 19, 2009 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Southbound Hwy 404 at the McNicoll Avenue Overpass in Toronto, facing south. The original cross-section of Hwy 404 was six lanes (three lanes per direction) when the highway first opened to traffic in 1977. A fourth lane was added in each direction in 1999, and the High-Occupancy Vehicle Lane was opened in 2005. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on August 19, 2009 - © Cameron Bevers)
