Johansen Expressway (Alaska) Photographs

JOHANSEN EXPRESSWAY #4 - © Cameron Bevers             JOHANSEN EXPRESSWAY #5 - © Cameron Bevers

Left - Start of the Johansen Expressway at University Avenue in Fairbanks, facing east. This short expressway is about 4 miles in length, and forms a quick route across the northern side of Fairbanks. In conjunction with another arterial street known as Geist Road, the Johansen Expressway joins the Steese Expressway (Hwy 2) on the eastern side of Fairbanks with the George Parks Highway (Hwy 3) on the western side of Fairbanks. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Right - The first interchange on the Eastbound Johansen Expressway is at Peger Road. It is one of two full interchanges along the expressway.

Left - Facing west along the Johansen Expressway towards the University Avenue Intersection from the Peger Road Interchange. Although the Johansen Expressway ends about one mile ahead at University Avenue, Geist Road continues straight ahead and eventually joins the George Parks Highway (Hwy 3) west of Fairbanks. Right - Aurora Drive Exit on the Johansen Expressway, facing west from Danby Street in Fairbanks. The Aurora Drive exit is only a partial interchange, with a single exit ramp from the Westbound Johansen Expressway. All other movements to and from Aurora Drive must utilize the adjacent Danby Street Intersection.

Left - Danby Street Intersection on the Eastbound Johansen Expressway. Like many of Fairbanks' expressways, the Johansen Expressway is partly grade-separated, but it also has some at-grade signalized intersections. This is the final at-grade intersection on the Johansen Expressway until Hunter Street, located nearly 2 miles to the east. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Left - East of Danby Street, a future staged interchange exists on the Johansen Expressway. The highway lanes are diverted onto the diamond interchange ramps, while the "through" lanes are barricaded off. Presumably, this interchange is being planned to serve a future arterial street that will replace the at-grade intersection at Danby Street. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Right - Facing west along the Johansen Expressway at the Hampstead Avenue Pedestrian Overpass. The unusual overpass is actually closed to pedestrian traffic, because it doesn't fully cross the highway. The structure passes over only the westbound lanes of the Johansen Expressway, and appears to have been built in advance of the interchange merely to provide an overhead sign support for the upcoming Danby Street & Aurora Drive exits. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Right - The College Road Interchange on the Johansen Expressway in Fairbanks is a Single-Point Diamond Interchange, the northernmost interchange of this type in the United States. Coincidentally, the Johansen Expressway's only other full interchange at Peger Road is also a Single-Point Diamond Interchange. These interchanges are characterized by a single set of traffic signals controlling all movements from the interchange ramps. See an Enlarged Photo Here.
