History of Secondary Highway 596A (#1):

Secondary Highway 596A was a local highway in the District of Kenora that was created out of a route renumbering in 1963. During the year, the route of Highway 596 was extended northerly from Pellatt Township to Minaki. In turn, a portion of the old route of Highway 596 via Laclu was renumbered as Highway 596A. The route appeared on the 1963 edition of the Ontario Official Road Map only, before being renumbered once again to Highway 641 in the first half of 1964. The 1964 edition of the Ontario Official Road Map was updated in July of that year, and depicted the route via Laclu as Highway 641, rather than Highway 596A. Initially, this highway was gravel-surfaced for its entire length. However, a bituminous surface treatment was completed along Highway 596A from the Highway 17 Junction northerly to the Highway 596 Junction in Pellatt Township during 1963. A different Highway 596A (#2) existed near Minaki during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
