History of Secondary Highway 658 (#2):
The second incarnation of Secondary Highway 658 connects Kenora to nearby Redditt. This minor collector highway was created out of a route renumbering in 1985, when
the notorious Secondary Highway 666 designation was permanently retired. The former route of Highway 666 was renumbered as Highway 658. The highway was paved from
Kenora to the Highway 659 Junction near Black Sturgeon Lake. A gravel-surfaced section existed from Highway 659 northerly to Redditt, although this gravel section
had been paved over by 1987. On March 31, 1997, the southern section of Highway 658 was transferred to the Town of Kenora. The 3.8 km urban section of Highway 658
lying between the Highway 17 and Highway 17A Junction is now known as Veterans Drive. The remainder of the highway from Highway 17A to Redditt is still in the
provincial highway system. A different, unrelated
Highway 658 existed near Sudbury between 1966 and 1974.
