Page 10: Historical King's Highway 401 Photographs (1995 to 1999)
![]() Left - View of Hwy 401 approaching the Mill Street Interchange in Newcastle in 1995, facing west from Graham Creek. This great photo shows the original
four-lane cross section of Hwy 401 through Newcastle, prior to the highway's widening in the late 1990s. This section of Hwy 401 was widened from four to six lanes
under Contract #1997-800. See an Enlarged Photo Here. This large
concrete barrel arch culvert has a diameter of 40 feet and was among the first structures built along the new extension of Hwy 401 from Newcastle to Port Hope. The
Graham Creek structure was built under Contract #1957-280 and was completed in 1958. See an

![]() Left - View of the eastbound Hwy 401 directional exit ramp to northbound Yonge Street (Hwy 11) in Toronto, where it passes below the structure (Site #37-342)
carrying the exit ramp from westbound Hwy 401 to Yonge Street. This directional exit ramp was built this way in the mid-1960s due to the adjacent Hogg's Hollow
Bridge and the skew of the Yonge Street crossing, which made the construction of a conventional exit ramp to Yonge Street very challenging and costly. This
directional ramp also provides a high-capacity facility to service the heavy traffic volumes exiting from eastbound Hwy 401 to northbound Yonge Street. See an
Enlarged Photo Here. Photo taken on June 14, 1995.(Photo courtesy of Ontario Ministry of Transportation - © King's Printer for Ontario, 2026) Right - Facing west along the exit ramp to Yonge Street (Hwy 11) from westbound Hwy 401, where it passes over the directional exit ramp from eastbound Hwy 401.
The Yonge Street (Hwy 11) interchange on Hwy 401 was initially built in the 1950s as a full eight-ramp cloverleaf - and a very constrained one, at that. The original
cloverleaf interchange began to exhibit operational problems in the years following its opening, due to quickly rising traffic volumes and poor ramp geometry. As part
of the reconstruction and widening of Hwy 401 during the 1960s, the Yonge Street Interchange was redesigned to the layout seen today. See an

![]() Left - Facing west along the eastbound exit ramp from Hwy 401 at the Yonge Street (Hwy 11) Interchange in Toronto. After diverging from Hwy 401, this exit ramp
forks into two ramps - the two-lane directional ramp to northbound Yonge Street and a single-lane ramp to southbound Yonge Street. The high-level viaduct structure
over the Don River at Hogg's Hollow can be seen in the background just beyond the highway curve. See an

Toronto. The Yonge Street Interchange is rather complex, with four different grade-separated crossings. Three of the grade separations are situated along the
directional West-to-North ramp. This structure over Yonge Street also carries a pedestrain sidewalk between the east and west sides of Yonge Street. See an

![]() Left - Facing west along the on-ramp to the westbound Hwy 401 Express Lanes from northbound Allen Road in Toronto. This flyover structure (Bridge #4 - Site
#37-285) carries the on-ramp from northbound Allen Road across the westbound Hwy 401 Collector Lanes. At the time this photo was taken in 1995, this bridge also
crossed over a westbound Hwy 401 Express-to-Collector Transfer, which has since been removed from the highway below. Minor repairs to this structure were carried out
under Contract #1994-69. See an Enlarged Photo Here. Photo taken on June 14, 1995.(Photo courtesy of Ontario Ministry of Transportation - © King's Printer for Ontario, 2026) Right - View of the Allen Road Interchange on Hwy 401 in 1995, as seen from the flyover across the westbound Hwy 401 Collector Lanes (Bridge #4 - Site #37-285).
Note the now-removed Express-to-Collector Transfer in the background, which essentially only served the Keele Street Interchange. As a result, it was one of the more
lightly-used transfer points along Hwy 401 across Toronto. This transfer was reversed a few years after this photo was taken, so that it carried traffic from the
westbound Hwy 401 Collector Lanes to the westbound Hwy 401 Express Lanes. Prior to this change, motorists entering westbound Hwy 401 from the Bayview Avenue, Yonge
Street and Avenue Road Interchanges were not able to access the Hwy 401 Express Lanes until "The Basketweave", located between the Keele Street and Hwy 400
Interchanges. See an Enlarged Photo Here. Photo taken on June 14, 1995.(Photo courtesy of Ontario Ministry of Transportation - © King's Printer for Ontario, 2026)

directional ramp underpass (Site #37-341/2) to northbound Yonge Street in Toronto. The westbound Hwy 401 Collector Lanes narrow to two lanes only through the Yonge
Street Interchange - one of the few places within the Express-Collector Lane System where this occurs. See an

West-to-North ramp underpass (Site #37-341/1). The complex interchange at Yonge Street was built as part of a multi-year reconstruction and widening project. Under
Contract #1965-131, an Express-Collector Lane System was introduced along Hwy 401 from Hogg's Hollow to a point just east of the Bayview Avenue Interchange along with
a new higher-capacity interchange at Yonge Street (Hwy 11). See an Enlarged Photo Here.

initially widened to 12 lanes through the Yonge Street Interchange in the mid-1960s, the eastbound Hwy 401 Collector Lanes had only two lanes through the Yonge Street
Interchange. During subsequent reconstruction work, an additional eastbound lane was carried through the interchange. See an

![]() Left - Eastern side of the Neilson Road Overpass on Hwy 401 in Toronto. This was a new arterial road interchange built along Hwy 401 in the late 1970s under
Contract #1979-84. When the Toronto Bypass was first built through Scarborough in the 1950s, there were no interchanges or grade-separated roads crossing Hwy 401
between the Hwy 48 (Markham Road) Interchange and the Littles Road Interchange (today's Morningside Avenue). At the time this photo was taken in the Summer of 1995,
the Hwy 401 Express-Collector Lane System had been completed and fully opened to traffic. Previously, the Hwy 401 Express Lanes came to an end just west of the
Neilson Road Interchange. See an Enlarged Photo Here. This photo was taken on a Sunday during a
full closure of the westbound Hwy 401 Express Lanes for rehabilitation and maintenance. Weekend closures of the various roadways within Hwy 401's Express-Collector
Lane System were routinely done during the 1990s. Note how light the traffic is in the adjacent westbound Hwy 401 Collector Lanes, despite the westbound Hwy 401
Express Lanes being fully closed to traffic. It certainly speaks to the comparatively low traffic volumes on Hwy 401 at that time! If executed today, a daytime
closure like this one would result in severe congestion - even on a Sunday. An overhead sign marks the upcoming Hogg's Hollow Express-to-Collector Transfer, which
services Avenue Road (Hwy 11A) and Bathurst Street. At the time this photo was taken in 1995, westbound Hwy 401 traffic bound for Keele Street did not have to use the
upcoming Hogg's Hollow Transfer. A second Express-to-Collector Transfer once existed within the Allen Road Interchange which serviced Keele Street, although it has
since been closed to traffic. Today, traffic bound for Keele Street needs to transfer at Hogg's Hollow. See an

Left - View underneath the Duffins Creek Bridge on Hwy 401 in Pickering in 1995, shortly before the structure was replaced. The original lanes of Hwy 401
crossed Duffins Creek on two twin structures that were built as part of the Toronto-Oshawa Dual Highway in 1941. Both the eastbound and westbound spans were widened
in 1973, in order to permit the construction of an extra lane in each direction. The newer widened span is visible at right, while the original structure is visible
at left. The entire superstructure of the Duffins Creek Bridge was replaced when Hwy 401 was widened in this area in 1997. See an

construction techniques in Ontario. Even more than 60 years after it was built, it remains one of the longest flyovers ever built in Ontario, with a total span length
of 1,430 feet (436 metres). See an Enlarged Photo Here. Photo taken on June 13, 1996.(Photo courtesy of Ontario Ministry of Transportation - © King's Printer for Ontario, 2026) ![]()

foreground, Toronto-bound traffic heads east into the city via Hwy 401, while Mississauga Road carries suburban traffic into Streetsville. At one time, the
Mississauga Road Interchange was the only interchange situated along Hwy 401 between Trafalgar Road and Hwy 10 (Hurontario Street) - and for good reason. When Hwy 401
was first built in this area in the late 1950s, Streetsville was a small rural village located many miles out of the city. Suburban development in the 1970s and 1980s
transformed Streetsville into a large employment and residential district. See an

![]() Left - Eastern side of the Neilson Road Overpass on Hwy 401 in Toronto. The bridge-mounted pull-through sign for the westbound Hwy 401 Collector Lanes still
bears a reference to Markham Road as Hwy 48. Although signed along Hwy 401 until recent decades, Hwy 48 through Metro Toronto had actually been under municipal
jurisdiction since 1963. However, the route of Hwy 48 was signed along Hwy 401 to aid in way-finding, much like Metro Toronto's other non-freeway King's Highways
which were generally under municipal jurisdiction. Other than provincial freeways, Hwy 27 was the only King's Highway retained by the province within Metro Toronto by
the 1990s. All other signed highway routes within Metro Toronto were actually just municipal streets. See an

taken in 1997, a number of new high-rise buildings have been constructed around the intersection of Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue. Consequently, the city skyline
approaching the curve in Hwy 401 between Bayview Avenue and Yonge Street has changed quite a bit in recent decades. See an

![]() Left - Facing west across the flyover carrying the ramp from northbound Allen Road to the westbound Hwy 401 Express Lanes in Toronto. Careful observers will
note that the westbound Hwy 401 Collector Lanes once had four through lanes immediately west of this structure, as opposed to the current three lanes. When the
Express-to-Collector Transfer at Allen Road was reversed to become a Collector-to-Express Transfer in the early 2000s, it removed the need for an additional "away"
lane downstream of the transfer point. The reversal of this westbound transfer point at Allen Road was carried out as part of a broad highway rehabilitation project
between Bathurst Street and Jane Street under Contract #2000-0036. This change greatly improved traffic operations along Hwy 401 in this area, by providing a better
traffic balance in the Express-Collector Lane System west of Allen Road. See an

Until Hwy 401 was reconstructed through this part of Toronto in the 1960s, Martin Grove Road did not pass below Hwy 401. Rather, Martin Grove Road came to an end at a
pair of T-intersections with Dixon Road on either side of Hwy 401. Under Contract #1966-296, the Dixon Road Interchange was rebuilt. In doing so, engineers also
designed this direct connection below Hwy 401 between the discontinuous north and south legs of Martin Grove Road, so that it formed a single continuous street. See
