Left - New Belfield Road Flyover on Hwy 401 in Toronto in 1968, shortly after it was completed. The flyover to Belfield Road was later incorporated into the
route of Hwy 409 when it was built in the 1970s. Photo taken in October, 1968. Today, this ramp is the eastern terminus of Hwy 409, where it joins into Hwy 401 near Islington Avenue. Note that at the time this photo was taken, the overhead signs for the Hwy 401 Express/Collector diverge had not yet been installed. See an Enlarged Photo Here. Photo taken in October, 1968. Left - Facing east across the Hwy 409 Flyover to Eastbound Hwy 401 in Toronto in 1977. Although it isn't very clear in this photo (picture was damaged), the
Eastbound Hwy 401 Collector Lanes are only signed as "To Weston Road" from the end of Hwy 409. At the time this photo was taken in 1977, all other exits between
Hwy 409 and The Basketweave except for Weston Road could be accessed from the Express Lanes. Even Hwy 400 South (today's Black Creek Drive) was accessible from the
Express Lanes. Photo taken on October 14, 1977. Note that the high-level flyover from Southbound Hwy 427 to Eastbound Hwy 409 had not yet been constructed. The flyover wasn't built until the early 1990s. Motorists wishing to head east on Hwy 409 had to pass through a traffic signal on Hwy 427 in order to access the on-ramp to Eastbound Hwy 409. Also, note that Hwy 427 is only signed south from this interchange. The ramp leading to the north from Hwy 409 is signed as Indian Line. It wasn't until the early 1980s that the ramp to the north was signed as Hwy 427 as well. See an Enlarged Photo Here. Photo taken on June 9, 1978. Above - Close-up view of the Hwy 409 and Hwy 427 Interchange in Toronto in 1979. Note that the ramp from southbound Hwy 427 to eastbound Hwy 409
intersected the northbound lanes of Hwy 427 at a signalized intersection. This traffic signal remained in place on the northbound lanes of Hwy 427 for
years, until a direct freeway-to-freeway ramp flyover was completed at this interchange in 1992. Photo taken on April 20, 1979. (Photo courtesy of Ontario Ministry of Transportation - © King's Printer for Ontario, 2011) ![]()

(Photo courtesy of Ontario Ministry of Transportation - © King's Printer for Ontario, 2014) Right - New Hwy 427 South to Hwy 409 East Flyover in Toronto in 1992. This photo shows the recently completed flyover, which was only opened to traffic about two months earlier. Until 1992, traffic heading south on Hwy 427 had to turn left at an at-grade signalized intersection to access the ramp to Hwy 409 East. After the flyover was completed, the traffic signals at the Hwy 409 ramp were removed, thereby eliminating one of the most serious bottlenecks on Hwy 427. See an Enlarged Photo here. Left - Flyover from Hwy 427 South to Hwy 409 East in Toronto in 1995, facing southeast. This photo shows the completed flyover to Hwy 409 East along with an
ongoing Hwy 427 widening project through the Hwy 409 Interchange. Up until 1997, Hwy 427 was only four lanes (two lanes per direction) through the Hwy 409 Interchange.

Note the new Hwy 427 South to Hwy 409 East Flyover in the background. One extra lane was added along Hwy 427 in each direction through the Hwy 409 Interchange as a result of this reconstruction project. See an Enlarged Photo here. Photo taken on August 15, 1996.
