Left - Facing west along QEW from Ontario Street overpass in St. Catharines. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Facing west along QEW towards Henley Bridge from Ontario Street. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - View of the Henley Bridge on the QEW at St. Catharines, facing west. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Decorative stone pillar on the eastern approach to the Henley Bridge. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - A curved wall connects the stone pillar to the rest of the features of the Henley Bridge. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - The Henley Bridge is one of Ontario's most beautiful bridges. Two attractive stone sculptures were placed in the median of the QEW (one at each end of the bridge) during construction of the Henley Bridge in 1939, commemorating the dedication of the Queen Elizabeth Way by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother) during their Royal Visit to Canada that year. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - The top of the sculpture is graced by four regal lions, each bearing a unique shield. There is one lion facing in each direction of the compass. This
is the west-facing lion on the eastern sculpture. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - This photo shows the south-facing lion on the eastern sculpture. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - The Henley Bridge sculpture resembles the bow of a stylized Viking ship. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Close-up of coat-of-arms on the western Henley Bridge sculpture. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - Southern side of the Niagara-bound Henley Bridge on the QEW in St. Catharines. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Northern side of the Niagara-bound QEW Henley Bridge in St. Catharines. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - An extension was added to the Henley Bridge in the 1980s to accommodate an extra lane. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Toronto-bound Henley Bridge, facing west from the east bank of Twelve Mile Creek. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - View of the Niagara-bound Henley Bridge showing the 1980s concrete arch extension. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Old and new arches - the new arch was built just outside of the original 1939 arch. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - View underneath the Henley Bridge near the eastern abutment. When the Henley Bridge was expanded in the 1980s, every effort was made to replicate the
original design as much as possible. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - The twin Henley Bridges on the QEW in St. Catharines, facing east towards Niagara. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - The twin Henley Bridges on the QEW in St. Catharines, facing west towards Grimsby. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Niagara-bound Henley Bridge, facing west from the east bank of Twelve Mile Creek. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - The Henley Bridge railing design is unique, as it is a combination of both the classic style 1930s railing design and the present-day Jersey Barrier
railing design. This excellent compromise ensures the safety of motorists, while still retaining the bridge's aesthetical and historical merits. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Close-up of the original pier design on the Toronto-bound Henley Bridge. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - View between the twin Henley Bridges facing west towards Grimsby. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - This shot shows a portion of the original 1939 Henley Bridge and the 1988 extension. Note the impressions of the single-plank timber forms on the older portion of the structure. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - This original 1939 stanchion on the Toronto-bound QEW Henley Bridge was rehabilitated in the 1980s, yet it still retains its original design overall,
thanks to thoughtful foresight by the MTO. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - This stanchion is part of the 1988 extension, and is an exact replica of the 1939 stanchion. The Ministry of Transportation must be commended for their special care in restoring this historic bridge. However, it is unfortunate that this special care in structure rehabilitation is not extended to lesser-known bridges around the province which are equally interesting and historical. Left - Intricate concrete design below a stanchion on the Toronto-bound Henley Bridge. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - The parabolic end of the original 1939 pier is still faintly visible on the Niagara-bound structure, despite the extension that was added to the Henley Bridge in the 1980s. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - In the 1980s, the original pier shown above was extended. However, the new extension was built almost exactly to the original specifications, which
preserved the bridge's appearance. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Southern side of Niagara-bound Henley Bridge, facing west towards Grimsby. (Photograph taken on November 14, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)

Queen Elizabeth Way through St. Catharines. (Photograph taken on May 8, 2005 - © Cameron Bevers)
