Right - The Henley Bridge is one of Ontario's most beautiful bridges. Two attractive stone sculptures were placed in the median of the QEW (one at each end of the bridge) during construction of the Henley Bridge in 1939, commemorating the dedication of the Queen Elizabeth Way by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother) during their Royal Visit to Canada that year.

Left - The top of the sculpture is graced by four regal lions, each bearing a unique shield. There is one lion facing in each direction of the compass. This is the west-facing lion on the eastern sculpture.

Left - The Henley Bridge railing design is unique, as it is a combination of both the classic style 1930s railing design and the present-day Jersey Barrier railing design. This excellent compromise ensures the safety of motorists, while still retaining the bridge's aesthetical and historical merits.

Left - This original 1939 stanchion on the Toronto-bound QEW Henley Bridge was rehabilitated in the 1980s, yet it still retains its original design overall, thanks to thoughtful foresight by the MTO.

Right - This stanchion is part of the 1988 extension, and is an exact replica of the 1939 stanchion. The Ministry of Transportation must be commended for their special care in restoring this historic bridge. However, it is unfortunate that this special care in structure rehabilitation is not extended to lesser-known bridges around the province which are equally interesting and historical.

Above - Construction time again at the Henley Bridge. Extra lanes were added to the bridge in 2005-2006 to address growing traffic congestion problems on the Queen Elizabeth Way through St. Catharines.
