Left - The Glenn Highway provides a fairly direct route for traffic between Anchorage and Palmer. Several sections of the original Glenn Highway still exist through the various towns between Eagle River and Palmer, but these were all bypassed over the years. The freeway portion of the Glenn Highway between Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Valley Interchange near Palmer constitutes about half of Alaska's total freeway mileage. Left - The scenic Talkeetna Mountains appear on the horizon as the Glenn Highway (Hwy 1) rounds this curve approaching the Thunderbird Falls Exit. This exit provides access to a small community that lies along an old alignment of the Glenn Highway that was bypassed when the new freeway between Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley was constructed. The Thunderbird Falls Exit is only a partial interchange, with no grade separation over the freeway. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Right - Facing north along the Glenn Highway (Hwy 1) towards Palmer from the Thunderbird Falls Exit. The Old Glenn Highway (Eklutna Elders Road) used to form a complete loop through the communities of Thunderbird Falls and Eklutna Village. However, the Eklutna River Bridge on the Old Glenn Highway was recently closed to through traffic. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Note the white regulatory sign at right, advising over-height trucks to exit the freeway. Left - Distance sign on the Northbound Glenn Highway (Hwy 1) approaching the Old Glenn Highway Interchange. Both the new and old routes of the Glenn Highway lead to Palmer, but the new highway is shorter by 5 miles. Right - Exit sign for the Old Glenn Highway on the Northbound Glenn Highway (Hwy 1). An 18-mile section of the original Glenn Highway was bypassed in the 1960s by a new highway, which provided a more direct route to Palmer. The new Glenn Highway cut the road distance from Anchorage to Palmer by 5 miles, in addition to providing a strategic connection to the newly-built George Parks Highway (Hwy 3) to Fairbanks. The George Parks Highway is Alaska's primary north-south route across the state. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

The ramps at the trumpet interchange are in a "B" configuration, with the loop ramp carrying exiting traffic from the freeway. All traffic bound for Anchorage must use this freeway beyond this interchange, as there are no other roads connecting Palmer to Anchorage. Pedestrians and cyclists are actually permitted to use this section of the freeway, since there are no other roads available. See an Enlarged Photo Here.
