Left - This reverse curve on Hwy 99 about 2 km north of Duffey Lake reveals a view of one of the Lillooet area's dry inland peaks. Over the next 40 km, the route of Hwy 99 passes through an area of dramatic transformation. The wet temperate Pacific Coast climate rapidly disappears, and is replaced by the dry, hot climate of the BC Interior. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Right - Hwy 99 route marker about 22 km south of Lillooet. Route markers along Hwy 99 between Pemberton and Lillooet are rather uncommon, since there are very few intersecting roads and virtually no settlements along the 100-plus km route between these two towns. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Left - As Hwy 99 descends in elevation, the early spring conditions found around the Duffey Lake and Cayoosh Pass areas give was to a more lush late spring scene. However, this scenery rapidly changes again as Hwy 99 enters into "rain shadow" of the coast mountains in the Lillooet area. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Above - Hwy 99 wiggles its way south towards Pemberton beside Cayoosh Creek, about 17 km south of Lillooet. With many sharp curves and steep grades, the last 20 km section of Hwy 99 leading into Lillooet is posted at a 60 km/h speed limit. On some curves, motorists may have to slow down even more. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Right - Hwy 99 drops precipitously down into the Cayoosh Creek Canyon. The canyon walls exceed 350 metres (1,150 feet) in height in many places. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Left - Facing south along Hwy 99 at the Cayoosh Creek Bridge, about 13 km south of Lillooet. The near-vertical walls of the Cayoosh Creek Canyon are quite apparent in this view. The concrete and steel girder structure over Cayoosh Creek was only completed a few years ago. Previously, Hwy 99 crossed the creek on a single-lane timber beam structure with very poor alignment on the bridge approaches. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Right - Hwy 99 winds its way along this narrow rocky ledge about 200 metres (650 feet) above the canyon floor. This section of Hwy 99 is spectacular and can be driven in any road-worthy vehicle - but it is definitely not for the faint-hearted or those uneasy about heights. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Right - Facing south along Hwy 99 from the Cayoosh Creek Canyon Lookout, located about 10 km south of Lillooet. The lookout gives motorists an opportunity to pull over and admire the magnificent and rugged scenery of the canyon. There are no shoulders along this section of Hwy 99, so finding opportunities to pull over and stop are rather rare. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Left - Facing south (or north, depending on which way you view it) from the hairpin turn on Hwy 99. The highway practically folds back on itself! As one might expect, transport trucks crawl up this steep grade at very low speeds. Fortunately, Hwy 99 is not a major trucking route. Most Vancouver-bound trucks use Hwy 1. Left - Sign marking the entrance to the District Municipality of Lillooet on northbound Hwy 99. The catchphrase "guaranteed rugged" couldn't be more accurate - the town is surrounded by craggy mountains on all sides, and is bisected by the mighty Fraser River. The town is rich in history too, dating back to the Cariboo Gold Rush of the 1850s and 1860s. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Right - Hwy 99 descends this steep grade towards Lillooet. The mountains in the far distance are actually on the eastern side of the Fraser River. The Town of Lillooet is perched on the banks overlooking the river. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Left - The dramatic turquoise-blue colour of Seton Lake indicates that the lake is fed by glacial runoff water from the surrounding mountains. It is one of the most dramatic lake scenes in British Columbia. This enormous lake also serves as a hydro-electric reservoir for a nearby generating station. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Right - Facing north along Hwy 99 at the Power Canal Bridge. located about 4 km south of Lillooet. This interesting timber through truss structure was built in the 1950s in conjunction with the hydro-electric water diversion canal construction. A similar bridge was constructed on nearby Texas Creek Road. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Left - The Power Canal Bridge on Hwy 99 consists of a single span Howe-type truss, likely constructed from locally-obtained Douglas Fir timbers. Although this bridge originally only carried local traffic, the road from Lillooet to Seton Lake was eventually punched through the Coast Mountains via Cayoosh Pass near Duffey Lake. During the 1990s, British Columbia's Ministry of Transportation assumed the Duffey Lake Road as an extension of Hwy 99. See an Enlarged Photo Here.

Right - Eastern side of the Power Canal Bridge on Hwy 99. Bridges similar to this one once appeared along many highways in my home province of Ontario. The Department of Highways of Ontario (DHO) and Department of Northern Development studied bridge construction practices in British Columbia and began importing Douglas Fir timbers from British Columbia to aid in bridging rivers on Northern Ontario's highways.
