towards the Arctic Ocean. See an Enlarged Photo Here. Left - Western approach to the Longlac Railway Overhead. This interesting Wartime structure was completed in 1942, during construction of the Hearst-Geraldton
Highway (now Hwy 11). The bridge consists on 10 main spans plus two approach spans. Two of the spans are supported by a continuous Warren-type steel pony truss
structure. The remaining 10 spans are of concrete slab construction. See an Enlarged Photo Here. At a total length of 520 feet, this structure was one of Ontario's longest railway flyovers. It was completed at the height of World War II, despite severe shortages of structural steel. The new Hearst-Geraldton Highway was considered to be a priority Wartime highway construction project, meaning that many of the Department of Highways' scarce resources were dedicated to the completion of the highway.
