Right - Original Wellington Road Overpass on Hwy 401 in London. This structure was completed in 1956 and was demolished during a highway widening project in 2008. The bridge had to be removed because there was insufficient space to provide additional full-width through lanes on Hwy 401 below the existing bridge. In addition, the existing lane configuration across the old overpass did not allow badly-needed capacity improvements to take place on Wellington Road. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Left - Facing east along Hwy 401 from the Wellington Road Overpass in London. Between 2006 and 2008, an extensive reconstruction project was carried out along Hwy 401 through London, which saw the highway widened to six continuous through lanes through the Wellington Road Interchange. In addition, a new widened structure was built for Wellington Road and the interchange ramps were reconfigured. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Left - The earth fill approaches were cut away from the structure's abutments and a bypass lane was built around the north side of the old bridge. This bypass lane was built to allow westbound Hwy 401 traffic to proceed through the interchange during the bridge demolition. Protective fencing was set up to ensure that no debris fell onto the bypass lane during the bridge removal operations. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Right - The removal of the approach fill exposed the complex rigid frame girder configuration behind the abutment wall. It is quite amazing to see just how compact these rigid frame girder structures really are. It has been over 50 years since this area of the bridge was visible. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Left - This bypass lane eliminates the need for a lengthy detour for westbound Hwy 401 traffic during the bridge removal. Eastbound Hwy 401 traffic made use of the exterior partial-cloverleaf interchange ramps, which allowed traffic to bypass the construction site altogether. Although the new overpass structure was already in service, Wellington Road was closed entirely to traffic during the overnight bridge removal. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Right - The old Wellington Road Overpass sits immediately beside the new structure. As a result, it was not possible to remove the old bridge using explosives. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Left - Facing north towards the old and new Wellington Road Overpasses. The new structure is much longer than its predecessor. The new bridge allows for an immediate expansion of Hwy 401 to six lanes, but it will also be able to accommodate future highway expansion. The bridge also provides room for a "sub-collector" lane configuration, which will provide a simpler, single merge point for traffic entering the highway. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Right - As dusk falls, heavy demolition equipment gathers beside the Wellington Road Overpass on Hwy 401. The bridge will be drilled and cut into small pieces, so that it can be hauled away from the site in dump trucks. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Left - The bridge demolition was underway by 10:00 p.m. Within hours, the old Wellington Road Overpass was removed in its entirety. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Right - Crews remove the western side of the bridge first, and proceed by slowly cutting through the structure towards the eastern side. The Wellington Road structure didn't go down without a fight. Apparently, it was a very difficult bridge removal. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Left - Hwy 74 Overpass across Hwy 401 east of London. This single-span concrete rigid frame bridge was completed in 1956. This bridge represents the typical design used for most of the vintage overpasses along Hwy 401 between London and Woodstock. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Right - Facing west along Hwy 401 from the Hwy 74 Overpass. This section of Hwy 401 was widened from four to six lanes in the early 1990s. Several old eight-ramp cloverleaf interchanges along the highway were converted to simple four-ramp diamond interchanges in order to provide sufficient width below the structure for a six-lane highway. The extra freeway lane was built in the space that was previously used for the cloverleaf weaving lane between the loop ramps. This simple design concession spared most of the major overpasses along Hwy 401 between London and Woodstock from premature demolition, in addition to rectifying the traffic weaving problem on the freeway that was caused by the old cloverleaf interchange design.

Left - The Putnam Road structure was completed in 1955, but it was widened in 1992 to accommodate an extra lane on Hwy 401 in each direction. The original 1955 pier is flanked on both sides by the more recent pier extensions. Fortunately, the aesthetically-pleasing rigid frame design of the 1955 structure was replicated when the bridge was widened.

Left - The visual appeal of a freeway can be greatly enhanced by planting trees within the highway right-of-way. The trees in the loop ramp at Putnam Road greatly improve an otherwise mundane freeway interchange. As this photo demonstrates, the trees do not restrict visibility for drivers approaching Putnam Road on the exit ramp from Hwy 401, nor do they pose any significant collision risk. In my opinion, more emphasis needs to be placed on landscaping Ontario freeways. Careful landscape planning and increased tree planting would go a long way to improve the visual appearance of Ontario's roads.

Right - Structure identification number and date stamp (1992) on the Pigram Road Underpass. Like all structures carrying roadways below Hwy 401, the Pigram Road structure had to be widened when Hwy 401 was expanded to six lanes in the early 1990s.
