Page 27: Present Day King's Highway 401 Photographs (Hwy 412 to Whitby)
Left - Aerial view of the Lake Ridge Road Overpass on Hwy 401 in 2004, facing southwest. The area to the left of the bridge is the site of today's Hwy 412
Interchange. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on May 30, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Aerial view of the Lake Ridge Road Overpass on Hwy 401 between Ajax and Whitby in 2004, facing south. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on May 30, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - View of Hwy 401 from the Lake Ridge Road Overpass in 2004, facing east towards Whitby. Compare this 2004 photo to the photos from 2015 below, showing
the partially realigned Hwy 401 and Hwy 412 Interchange construction. This area has changed quite dramatically in recent years. See an
Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 24, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Facing west towards Ajax along Hwy 401 from the Lake Ridge Road Overpass in 2004. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 24, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - Facing north along Lake Ridge Road from Hwy 401. There was no grade separation at the Whitby-Pickering Town Line (Lake Ridge Road) when Hwy 401 was first
constructed here in the 1940s. The Lake Ridge Road Bridge spans both Hwy 401 and the adjacent railway lines. See an
Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 24, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Western side of the Lake Ridge Road Overpass on Hwy 401. This seven-span concrete "T" girder structure was built in 1960. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 24, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - Eastern side of the Lake Ridge Road Overpass on Hwy 401 between Ajax and Whitby. See an
Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 24, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - A vandal in the 1970s etched their initials into the handrail of the Lake Ridge Road Overpass. The age of this graffiti suggests that the Lake Ridge Road Overpass still bears its original green handrail paint that was applied to the newly completed structure in 1960. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 24, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - Facing north along Lake Ridge Road, showing the old and new structures across Hwy 401. Construction of the adjacent Hwy 412 Interchange in 2014-2015
triggered the need to replace the old 1960 Lake Ridge Road Overpass. At the time this photo was taken, Lake Ridge Road traffic had already been diverted onto the
new structure at left. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 5, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - View of the old 1960 Lake Ridge Road Overpass, as seen from the new 2015 structure. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 5, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - Immediately east of the old Lake Ridge Road Overpass, the new Hwy 412 Interchange is taking form. Initially referred to as the "West Durham Link", the
route of Hwy 412 will soon provide access between Hwy 401 and the Hwy 407 East Extension north of Whitby and Ajax. See an
Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 5, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - The centreline of Hwy 401 was in the process of being shifted to the north at the time this photo was taken. Since the design of left-hand freeway exits is strongly discouraged in Ontario for a variety of reasons, it was necessary to reconstruct Hwy 401 on a new alignment through the Hwy 412 Interchange. The relocation of Hwy 401 will allow the on-ramp to Hwy 412 to exit from the right-hand side of Hwy 401, which would not have been possible otherwise due to the railway lines running immediately to the south of Hwy 401. The westbound lanes of Hwy 401 are now using the new alignment, but the eastbound lanes are still following their original 1947 alignment. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 5, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - Facing east along Hwy 401 from Lake Ridge Road. The pavement of the former westbound lanes has already been removed. The eastbound lanes of Hwy 401 will
be shifted to the new alignment shortly. Once the eastbound lanes have been relocated, construction can begin on the new eastbound Hwy 401 to northbound Hwy 412 ramp.
See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 5, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - The old 1960 Lake Ridge Road Overpass will be removed as part of the construction of the new flyover to northbound Hwy 412. The bridge demolition will likely take place shortly after eastbound Hwy 401 traffic is shifted onto the new alignment. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 5, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - Newly-relocated section of Hwy 401, facing east from the Lake Ridge Road Overpass. The eastbound lanes of the diversion had not yet been opened to
traffic at the time this photo was taken. The new Hwy 412 Interchange can be seen under construction in the background. See an
Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 5, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - The northern approach fill leading up to the old 1960 Lake Ridge Road Overpass had to be removed in order to construct the Hwy 401 Diversion. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 5, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - The flyover structure from eastbound Hwy 401 to northbound Hwy 412 was approximately 75% complete when this photo was taken in July 2015. See an
Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 5, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - The new Lake Ridge Road structure had to be built at a higher elevation, since it had to span not only Hwy 401 but the ramps to Hwy 412 as well. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 5, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - Facing west along the new Hwy 401 Diversion towards Ajax from the Lake Ridge Road Overpass. See an
Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 5, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - The grading for the new on-ramp from southbound Hwy 412 to westbound Hwy 401 can be seen at right. As part of the Hwy 412 Interchange construction, a partial two-ramp interchange will also be built at adjacent Lake Ridge Road to provide access to and from the west. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 5, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - Facing west along the original Hwy 401 alignment. Compare this 2015 photo to my
2004 Photo above, showing the dramatic change which has taken place in this area as a result
of the Hwy 412 Interchange construction. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 5, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Northern side of the Lynde Creek Bridge on Hwy 401 in Whitby. This single-span concrete rigid frame structure was completed in 1941. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on July 8, 2006 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - Southern side of the Lynde Creek Bridge on Hwy 401 in Whitby. This historic bridge is being replaced as part of the Hwy 412 Interchange construction. See an
Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on May 17, 2006 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Date stamp and structure identification number on the Lynde Creek Bridge on Hwy 401 in Whitby. The original four-lane structure that was built in 1941 was widened in the 1970s to accommodate the expanded six-lane highway. The date stamp "1976" refers to the date of the bridge extensions, and not the original 1941 structure. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on May 17, 2006 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Western side of the Henry Street Overpass on Hwy 401 in Whitby. This two-span concrete rigid frame structure was completed in 1940. See an
Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on May 20, 2005 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Close-up of the Henry Street Overpass, showing the ornamental concrete centre pier & abutments. Note the steel box-beam median barrier along Hwy 401. This median barrier was built in the mid-1970s when Hwy 401 was expanded from four to six lanes. The box-beam median barrier seen here was replaced with a segmental concrete median barrier in 2005. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on May 20, 2005 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - The Henry Street Bridge was only the second overpass to be completed on Hwy 401. The first overpass constructed along Hwy 401 was at Rougemount Drive in
Pickering in 1939, during the first phase of construction of the Toronto-Oshawa Highway. However, the old 1939 Rougemount Drive Overpass was replaced with a new
structure in 1995. As a result, the Henry Street Bridge is now the oldest surviving grade separation on Hwy 401. It is also one of the earliest examples of a
double-span concrete rigid frame bridge left in the province. The structure is on the Ministry of Culture's Heritage Bridge List. See an
Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on May 20, 2005 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Western side of the Hwy 12 (Brock Street) Overpass on Hwy 401 in Whitby, as seen from neighbouring Henry Street Overpass. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on May 20, 2005 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Facing east along Hwy 401 towards Thickson Road from the Hwy 12 (Brock Street) Overpass. The section of Hwy 401 between Kingston Road in Scarborough and
Ritson Road in Oshawa is the oldest section of Hwy 401. This section of Hwy 401 (known initially as Hwy 2A) was officially opened to traffic on December 3, 1947,
after nearly 10 years of construction. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on May 20, 2005 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Facing south across the Hwy 12 (Brock Street) Overpass on Hwy 401. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on May 20, 2005 - © Cameron Bevers)
