Page 28: Present Day King's Highway 401 Photographs (Whitby to Oshawa)
Left - Aerial view of the Stevenson Road Overpass at Hwy 401 in Oshawa, facing south (Photograph taken on May 30, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Aerial view of the Stevenson Road Overpass at Hwy 401 in Oshawa, facing north. The Stevenson Road Overpass crosses Hwy 401, Champlain Avenue and Bloor Street (the North and South Service Roads). The ramps in each quadrant provide access from Stevenson Road to the Service Roads only. All traffic must then use either Thickson Road or Park Road to access Hwy 401. The Park Road Interchange will be replaced over the next few years with a new interchange at Stevenson Road, which will permit direct access to Hwy 401. Left - The original triple-arch bridge over Oshawa Creek was completed in 1941. The structure was widened in 1978 to permit an extra lane in either direction
along Hwy 401. The bridge widening is quite obvious, as seen in this photo taken through one of the arches. (Photograph taken on May 30, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - One of the three arches over Oshawa Creek carries a bicycle path. (Photograph taken on May 30, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - Southern side of the Oshawa Creek Bridge, facing east towards Simcoe Street (Photograph taken on May 30, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Despite their aesthetically pleasing appearance, the concrete arch bridge is seldom used in Ontario today. The Oshawa Creek Bridge on Hwy 401 is one of several examples of this bridge type constructed on Ontario's Highways in the 1930s and 1940s. (Photograph taken on May 30, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Simcoe Street Overpass on Hwy 401 in Oshawa. Structure completed in 1941. (Photograph taken on July 8, 2006 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Close-up of the western side of the Simcoe Street Overpass. Note the embossed concrete elements on the centre pier. This structure is one of the last surviving overpasses on Hwy 401 dating from the 1940s. (Photograph taken on July 8, 2006 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - Facing west towards Toronto from the Simcoe Street Overpass. The Toronto to Oshawa section of Hwy 401 was the very first portion of
this highway to be opened to traffic. Apart from the highway widening and improvements in the 1970s, the highway has not changed very much over
the past 60 years. (Photograph taken on July 8, 2006 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Eastern side of the Simcoe Street Overpass on Hwy 401 in Oshawa (Photograph taken on July 8, 2006 - © Cameron Bevers)
Left - Southern half of the Simcoe Street Interchange in Oshawa. The on-ramp to Eastbound Hwy 401 was removed decades ago. (Photograph taken on July 8, 2006 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - The Simcoe Street Ramp in the northwest interchange quadrant used to be a bi-directional ramp. When access to Simcoe Street from Westbound Hwy 401 was closed off in the 1970s, this ramp was reconstructed to allow only one direction of traffic flow.
