Left - Eastern side of the Napanee CN Railway Subway on Hwy 401. The section of Hwy 401 approaching the Napanee CN Railway Subway was constructed below-grade, within a large limestone rock cut. As a result, the railway line crosses over Hwy 401 more or less at the original ground line. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Left - Facing east along Hwy 401 towards Kingston from the Napanee CN Railway Subway. The adjacent structure carries Newburgh Road across Hwy 401. The section of Hwy 401 through Napanee is the most interesting section of the freeway between Belleville and Kingston, as the freeway meanders through Napanee's limestone hills. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Right - Facing east along Hwy 401 towards Kingston from the Switzerville Road Overpass near Napanee. The section of Hwy 401 between Napanee and Odessa was first opened to traffic on November 29, 1962. It is interesting to note that this section of Hwy 401 was initially opened as an undivided highway, with only two traffic lanes available for use (one lane per direction). Due to other more urgent construction priorities, the westbound lanes of the highway remained incomplete, and were not opened to traffic for another two years. The completed four lane divided highway was officially opened to traffic on November 12, 1964. At that time, the existing two lane highway was repainted to permit eastbound traffic only, while all westbound traffic was shifted onto the newly-completed carriageway. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Right - Facing south along Former Hwy 133 (now Lennox & Addington Road 4) from the Hwy 401 Interchange. Up until 1997, this short provincial highway connected Hwy 401 to Hwy 2 and Hwy 33 west of Odessa. As part of the general review of provincial services during the 1990s, it was determined that Hwy 133 served mostly a local purpose, and no longer carried out a provincial function. As a result, Hwy 133 was downloaded to the County of Lennox & Addington in 1997. The former highway is now known as Lennox & Addington Road 4. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Left - On and on it goes. Fortunately, rural traffic jams such as this are fairly uncommon on Hwy 401. This photo shows Hwy 401 from the Former Hwy 133 (now Lennox & Addington Road 4) Overpass, facing west towards Belleville. See an Enlarged Photo here.

Above - Facing east along Hwy 401 towards Kingston from the Hwy 38 Overpass. This section of Hwy 401 was widened to six lanes in 2005 and 2006. The project included the removal of an old railway overhead, located at the crest of the hill just east of Hwy 38. The decommissioned railway overhead spanned the former K & P (Kingston and Pembroke) Railway right-of-way. See an Enlarged Photo here.
