The Kingston section of Hwy 401 is one of the oldest portions of this freeway in Eastern Ontario. Note the narrow grass median, with a temporary Jersey barrier added beside the westbound lanes for safety. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on April 9, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Above - MacDonald-Cartier M-C Freeway route marker on Hwy 401 in Kingston. The entire length of Hwy 401 was rededicated as the MacDonald-Cartier Freeway by
Prime Minister John P. Robarts in 1965. The special highway dedication commemorated two of Canada's Fathers of Confederation, Sir John A. MacDonald and Sir George
E. Cartier. Sadly, these signs are now almost extinct along Hwy 401. Installation of the blue-and-white M-C Freeway signs was suspended in the early 1990s and was
never resumed. This particular example at the Sir John A. MacDonald Boulevard Interchange in Kingston was one of the last new M-C Freeway signs ever installed
along Hwy 401. It was erected during construction of the new interchange at Sir John A. MacDonald Boulevard in Kingston in 1992-1993. See an

Left - The Cataraqui River Valley between Montreal Street and the Hwy 15 Interchange is one of the most dramatic valleys on Hwy 401 in Eastern Ontario. The
Montreal Street Overpass can be seen at the horizon. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on April 9, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Facing west along Hwy 401 towards Kingston from the Hwy 15 Overpass. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on April 9, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
Above - Facing east along Hwy 401 from the Hwy 15 Overpass east of Kingston. The rocky topography of this area prompted the highway's designers to use a
"diamond" interchange at Hwy 401 & Hwy 15. The diamond interchange design is quite uncommon in Ontario, despite its widespread use in many other North American
jurisdictions. See an Enlarged Photo here. (Photograph taken on April 9, 2004 - © Cameron Bevers)
