HWY 401 #1245

Above - Aerial view of Hwy 401 at the future site of the Hwy 403 & Hwy 410 Interchange in Mississauga in 1974. The new freeway interchange was built immediately east of the First Line (Kennedy Road) Overpass. Construction got underway on the first phase of the Hwy 403 & Hwy 410 Interchange in 1974, shortly after this photo was taken. See an Enlarged Photo Here. Photo taken in 1974.

Right - Facing north towards Brampton along the single southbound lane of Hwy 410 from the Hwy 401 Interchange in 1979. Until the early 1990s, Hwy 410 ended at a loop ramp which connected to the eastbound lanes of Hwy 401. The loop ramp was eventually removed and replaced with a directional flyover. Photo taken in July, 1979.

HWY 401 #814

Above - Facing east along Eastbound Hwy 401 from the Hwy 410 Interchange in Mississauga in 1980. Originally, traffic entering Eastbound Hwy 401 from Southbound Hwy 410 had to use the sub-collector lanes approaching Dixie Road, which can be seen in the foreground. The Dixie Road sub-collector lanes were separated from the Eastbound Hwy 401 lanes by a steel beam guide rail median to minimize weaving conflicts. A temporary transfer existed near Tomken Road to allow traffic from Hwy 410 to leave the Dixie Road sub-collector lanes and join the Eastbound Hwy 401 lanes. This temporary transfer was removed in the early 1990s, when a new flyover was built from Southbound Hwy 410 to Eastbound Hwy 401. Photo taken on October 7, 1980.

Although it isn't particularly clear in this photo, the left-hand overhead guide sign in the background reads "403 to 10 Mississauga". At the time this photo was taken in the Summer of 1982, Hwy 403 ended at Hwy 10 near the Square One Shopping Centre. The Mississauga-to-Oakville section of Hwy 403 wasn't opened to traffic until December, 1982. Photo taken on August 18, 1982.

The Hwy 410 loop ramp seen here was closed off to traffic in 1990 when a new flyover was completed between Southbound Hwy 410 and Eastbound Hwy 401. During the early 1990s, the hill in the background was removed in order to provide a direct ramp connection between Hwy 410 and Hwy 403. Photo taken on October 18, 1982.

This photo shows the original undivided two-lane highway between Mississauga and Brampton, which was built as a staged freeway. Note the graded right-of-way for the future southbound lanes of Hwy 410 at right, which were not completed until the late 1980s. The Courtneypark Drive Overpass was completed in 1980, making it the first overpass to be built on Hwy 410. The current two-ramp interchange at Courtneypark Drive was not completed until 1989. Photo taken on June 3, 1983.

At the time this photo was taken, access to Hwy 403 was closed while the flyover across the future Hwy 401 Express Lanes was being constructed. During this construction project, traffic on Westbound Hwy 401 bound for Westbound Hwy 403 was able to utilize the newly-completed Hwy 403 Express Lanes instead, which had opened to traffic earlier in 1984. Left - Reversed speed limit sign on Hwy 401 at Hwy 410. It was common practice up until the 1980s to remove or reverse regulatory speed limit signs in construction zones where advisory speed signs were in use, so that the regulatory speed limit was not visible to traffic. However, in many cases, the regulatory signs were not restored after construction ended, as was the case here. Also note the absence of the Hwy 401 Express Lanes at left, which were not built until the early 1990s. Photo taken on October 21, 1986.

In the background of this photo, the approaches to the old 1950s-era Kennedy Road Overpass have been removed, in preparation for the structure's demolition. The removal of the Kennedy Road Overpass was required in order to construct the Hwy 401 & Hwy 410 Interchange. Photo taken on October 21, 1986.

HWY 401 #536

Above - Construction of the new Hwy 410 Flyover on Hwy 401 in Mississauga in 1989. This massive construction project took place between 1988 and 1990 and resulted in the completion of new ramps between Hwy 401 West and Hwy 410. In addition, the original 1970s loop ramp from Southbound Hwy 410 to Eastbound Hwy 401 was replaced with a directional flyover. The falsework required to construct these cast-in-place concrete flyovers at Hwy 401 and Hwy 410 was quite astonishing! Photo taken on July 4, 1989.
