Left - Facing west along Hwy 8 towards the new Flyover from the Conestoga Parkway (Hwy 7). This new two-lane structure relieved a huge bottleneck on the Conestoga Parkway, where traffic entering the Parkway from Hwy 8 West fought with traffic exiting from the Parkway to Hwy 8 East at a poorly-designed partial cloverleaf interchange.

Right - The new interchange at Hwy 8 and the Conestoga Parkway (Hwy 7) has greatly relieved traffic congestion on the Parkway approaching Hwy 8 from Waterloo and Hwy 8 approaching the Parkway from Cambridge. A new two-lane ramp was constructed for Waterloo-bound traffic on Hwy 8.

Left - Eastern side of the seven-span concrete truss "bowstring" bridge at Freeport. This magnificent bridge was the second-longest concrete truss bridge ever built in this province. Coincidentally, Ontario's longest concrete truss bridge also spans the Grand River, on a former alignment of Hwy 6 in Caledonia. The Caledonia Bridge boasts nine impressive bowstring spans.

Right - The Freeport Bridge was fully restored in 2003. The reconstruction project was particularly notable because an unprecedented amount of attention was paid to the fine details of this bridge. The entire bridge was restored precisely to its original appearance, including the embossed concrete arches, shown here.

Left - Side-view of a rehabilitated bowstring truss span. Exceptional praise in owed to the Region of Waterloo for their thoughtful restoration of the Freeport Bridge. The Region has set a highly commendable example of historical bridge conservation, which should serve as a model for the MTO and other jurisdictions to follow when rehabilitating our precious bridge heritage.
