Left - Trans-Canada Highway and Yellowhead Highway route markers on eastbound Battle Street in Kamloops. See an
Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - An overhead sign on eastbound Battle Street provides direction to traffic at the complicated Kamloops Interchange. Traffic bound for Hwy 1 East and Hwy 97 South must continue east along Battle Street a little further in order to access the on-ramp to the eastbound Trans-Canada Highway. Hwy 1 West and both directions of Hwy 5 can be accessed from the on-ramp at right, as well as Hwy 97 North. If you are an Ontario road enthusiast, you'll likely be admiring the classic Ontario-style Aluminum Tapered Leg (ATL) overhead sign structure. British Columbia still has several of these sign structures scattered throughout the province. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Hwy 1, Hwy 5 & Hwy 97 route markers at the Kamloops Interchange. All three highways share an overlapped route for about 11 km through Kamloops.
Although it is not officially known by this name, I've used the term "Kamloops Freeway" to describe this overlapped route of Hwy 1, Hwy 5 & Hwy 97 to simplify the
photo descriptions. Not only are there three different route numbers involved along this stretch of the freeway, but as this sign assembly indicates, two of the
routes have opposing cardinal directions. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Facing south along the Southern Yellowhead Highway (Hwy 5) approaching the Kamloops Interchange. At the interchange, Hwy 5 joins with Hwy 1 & Hwy 97. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Overhead sign on southbound Hwy 5 at the Kamloops Interchange. Traffic bound for Hwy 1 East and Hwy 97 South must exit and follow Battle Street for a
short distance in order to access the ramp to the eastbound Trans-Canada Highway. Traffic bound for Hwy 1 West & Hwy 5 South can continue straight ahead to access
the freeway. Although it isn't marked on the sign, Hwy 97 North is also accessible via the ramp to Hwy 1 West & Hwy 5 South. See an
Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Facing north along the Southern Yellowhead Highway (Hwy 5) from the Kamloops Interchange. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) ![]()
Above - Junction assembly on eastbound River Street at the Kamloops Interchange, directing traffic to the Trans-Canada Highway and the Southern Yellowhead
Highway. Interestingly, this sign assembly also contains an old-style Hwy 5 route marker, which likely pre-dates the Coquihalla Highway's completion in the 1980s. All
modern Hwy 5 signs in British Columbia are the special Yellowhead Highway route markers, like the one seen at left. See an
Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Facing north towards the Kamloops Interchange at the junction of Hwy 1, Hwy 5 & Hwy 97. The Kamloops Interchange is actually comprised of three
separate, closely-spaced interchanges, that provides "all-moves" access between the three main highways, as well as some connections to Kamloops' arterial street
system. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - The Southern Yellowhead Highway (Hwy 5) heads north across the Thompson River on its route towards Yellowhead Pass and Jasper, Alberta. Left - Approaching the Kamloops Interchange on Hwy 1 & Hwy 97, facing east. Note the sign marking the end of the freeway. Although the first traffic signal
is situated about 2 km away, the divided highway ends well before that. Conflicting cross traffic appears as soon as the median barrier ends, due to the connections
with a service road beside the highway. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Facing east towards the Kamloops Interchange on Hwy 1 & Hwy 97. The Southern Yellowhead Highway (Hwy 5) exits from the Kamloops Freeway at right. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Facing east along the Kamloops Freeway towards the Hwy 5 North Interchange. The ski resort town of Sun Peaks is the only major destination listed within
British Columbia, as the northeastern portion of the province is fairly sparsely populated. Jasper lies across the Yellowhead Pass in the neighbouring province of
Alberta. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - The Kamloops Freeway continues its steep descent down towards the Hwy 5 Interchange. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

(Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - The runaway truck lane was strategically placed before the end of the Kamloops Freeway. At this point, the Kamloops Freeway has been on a downhill grade for almost 8 km. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Approaching the runaway truck lane on the eastbound Kamloops Freeway. The ramp is tangent to Lane 2 of the freeway, which is typically the lane used by
most trucks. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Facing east along the Kamloops Freeway, about 1 km east of the Summit Drive Interchange. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

There is a continuous freeway from this point westerly to the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal, located northwest of Vancouver. Although it is known by different names and route numbers depending on location, this freeway extends for a total distance of 375 km between Kamloops and the Vancouver area. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Overhead guide signs on northbound Summit Drive approaching the Kamloops Freeway, directing traffic onto Notre Dame Drive. The ramps at the Summit Drive Interchange
are in a half-diamond configuration, with access only from and to the east. Accordingly, traffic bound for the westbound Kamloops Freeway needs to use the ramp at
the adjacent Columbia Street Interchange. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Overhead guide signs on southbound Summit Drive. There are no references to Hwy 97 on these signs, likely because of space constraints. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Columbia Street Interchange on the eastbound Kamloops Freeway. The Columbia Street Interchange, together with the adjacent Summit Drive Interchange,
provide an "all-moves" access route into the city from the Kamloops Freeway. British Columbia uses upward-pointing arrows on its freeway pull-through signs,
supplemented by the phrase "Thru Traffic". See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Facing east along the Kamloops Freeway from the Columbia Street Interchange. Since one of the eastbound lanes exits at Columbia Street, only two eastbound through lanes continue east of the interchange. See an Enlarged Photo Here. Left - Facing east along the Kamloops Freeway, approaching the Columbia Street Interchange. Lane 3 of the freeway exits off to Columbia Street, while Lane 2
becomes an "either-or" lane, where traffic has the option of continuing eastbound or exit the freeway. See an
Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Overhead signs on the westbound Kamloops Freeway, marking the upcoming Hillside Way (Hwy 5A) Interchange. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Guide sign on the westbound Kamloops Freeway marking the Hillside Way (Hwy 5A) Interchange. The City of Merritt is located about 85 km southwest of
Kamloops, and is accessible either by continuing straight ahead on the Kamloops Freeway to the Coquihalla Highway, or taking Hwy 5A south from this interchange. See
an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Hillside Way (Hwy 5A) Overpass on the Kamloops Freeway, facing west. The exit to the adjacent Pacific Way Interchange is situated immediately after the Hwy 5A structure. A short westbound sub-collector lane exists between the Hwy 5A Interchange and Pacific Way Interchange, since the two interchanges are very closely-spaced. See an Enlarged Photo Here. Left - Facing south along Hwy 5A (Hillside Way) from the Kamloops Freeway Interchange. Merritt lies approximately 90 km ahead. Prior to the completion of the
Coquihalla Highway in the 1980s, Hwy 5A was known as Hwy 5. The old route of Hwy 5 from Kamloops to Merritt was renumbered as Hwy 5A, since the new Coquihalla
Highway (today's Hwy 5) was a faster and slightly shorter route. Today, Hwy 5A serves as a more leisurely alternate route than taking the freeway. See an

Left - Approaching the Kamloops Truck Scales on the eastbound Kamloops Freeway. Beyond the crest of this hill, the Kamloops Freeway descends a long downhill
grade for nearly 8 km. While the grade itself is a fully controlled-access freeway, there are signalized intersections and conflicting cross-traffic movements just
beyond the end of the freeway at the base of the grade. See an Enlarged Photo Here. Left - A "Your Choice" tourism-oriented sign for Kelowna on the westbound Kamloops Freeway approaching the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) Interchange. Signs such
as this one are placed in advance of strategic highway junction in British Columbia, to advise tourists of the alternate routes available to them to reach certain
destinations. The most direct way to Vancouver from Kamloops is to take the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5), although the scenic alternate routes suggested here are
genuinely spectacular! See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Guide sign approaching the Hwy 1 & Hwy 97 exit on the westbound Kamloops Freeway. Although both Hwy 1 & Hwy 97 exit the freeway, only Hwy 1 is marked on this sign. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Facing west along the westbound Kamloops Freeway approaching the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) Interchange. West of Kamloops, the highway passes through a
high plateau of grasslands. The Kamloops Freeway (Hwy 1, Hwy 5 & Hwy 97) splits into two routes ahead. The freeway continues south towards Merritt via the
Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5), while Hwy 1 & Hwy 97 exit the freeway and continue west towards Cache Creek via the Trans-Canada Highway. See an
Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - This sign approaching the Coquihalla Highway Interchange is the first to show that both Hwy 1 & Hwy 97 exit the freeway ahead towards Cache Creek. Also, the scenic route to Vancouver via Hwy 99 through Lillooet is also shown on the sign. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Approaching the Coquihalla Highway Interchange on the Kamloops Freeway, facing west. See an
Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on June 1, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Overhead guide sign at the Coquihalla Highway Interchange, facing west. Here, the overlapped routes of Hwy 1, Hwy 5 & Hwy 97 part ways. The freeway continues south to Merritt via the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5), while Hwy 1 & Hwy 97 exit the freeway at right and head west to Cache Creek via the Trans-Canada Highway. Just to add to the driver workload at this already complicated decision point, the routes of Hwy 97C to Kelowna and Hwy 97D to Logan Lake are also shown on this sign. British Columbia has five routes containing the Hwy 97 route number (Hwy 97, Hwy 97A, Hwy 97B, Hwy 97C & Hwy 97D). Simply indicating the control cities of Logan Lake and Kelowna would have likely been a better approach than actually posting the Hwy 97C and Hwy 97D route numbers. At a distance, these two alpha-numerical highway designations look rather similar to that of Hwy 97, which exits the freeway at right. See an Enlarged Photo Here.
