Left - Facing west along Hwy 1 & Hwy 97, just west of the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) Interchange. Note the distance sign at right, which provides
distances to control cities located along Hwy 97 and also Hwy 99. Westbound traffic bound for Vancouver and Hope are encouraged to use Hwy 5 from Kamloops, and thus
these control cities are not listed as destinations via Hwy 1, even though Hwy 1 ultimately passes through both of them. See an
Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Approaching the Coquihalla Highway Interchange on eastbound Hwy 1 & Hwy 97 west of Kamloops. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

A bypassed highway alignment can be seen in the background, where a steep hill and several sharp curves were eliminated through the construction of a relocated highway. See an Enlarged Photo Here. Left - Close-up of the 2 km advance guide sign for the upcoming Hwy 5 (Coquihalla Highway) Interchange on eastbound Hwy 1 & Hwy 97. The Coquihalla Highway
is signed as part of the Yellowhead Highway Route, which extends south to Hope. See an
Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - A "Your Choice" tourism-oriented sign for Kelowna on eastbound Hwy 1 & Hwy 97 approaching the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) Interchange. Signs such as this one are placed in advance of strategic highway junction in British Columbia, to advise tourists of the alternate routes available to them to reach certain destinations. I think these signs are a great way to encourage motor tourism on what would otherwise be less-travelled routes. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Distance sign on eastbound Hwy 1 & Hwy 97. Although Kamloops is located on Hwy 1 & Hwy 97, Salmon Arm is accessible by Hwy 1 East only, while
Vernon is accessible via Hwy 97 South only. See an Enlarged Photo Here. A second lane was provided in each direction, in order to allow faster traffic to pass slow trucks on this steep grade. Even trucks descending this grade have to lower their speed considerably. Left - Trees briefly reappear along Hwy 1 & Hwy 97 as the highway crosses the summit above Kamloops Lake, 6 km east of Savona. The hot, dry climate of the
Kamloops Lake area prohibits many species of trees from taking root at lower elevations. See an
Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Scenic view of the summit on Hwy 1 & Hwy 97 east of Savona. The highway climbs to an elevation of approximately 575 m (1,885 feet) above sea level as it crosses over this ridge. The elevation of Kamloops Lake is approximately 335 m (1,100 feet) above sea level. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - A transport truck can be seen on Hwy 1 & Hwy 97 at left, slowly ascending the long grade west of Walhachin. The dry, treeless landscape west of
Walhachin provides for outstanding visibility of the highway ahead. Roughly 4 km of Hwy 1 & Hwy 97 are visible in this photo. See

In the foreground, a former alignment of the Trans-Canada Highway can be seen cutting through the sagebrush. Several sections of the Trans-Canada Highway were relocated onto improved alignments in this area during the 1950s and 1960s. See an Enlarged Photo Here. Left - Facing east along Hwy 1 & Hwy 97, about 4 km east of Cache Creek. Despite the dry climate of the Cache Creek area, an irrigation system draws water
from the nearby Thompson River, which allows the land beside the highway at right to be used for agricultural purposes. See

Left - A "Your Choice" tourism-oriented sign for Vancouver and the West Coast on westbound Hwy 1 & Hwy 97 approaching Cache Creek. Both routes to the coast
are incredibly scenic, but the route offered by Hwy 99 is slightly less direct than the Trans-Canada Highway. Due to the high mountain passes along the route, Hwy 99
is also more susceptible to winter closures than the Trans-Canada Highway. See
an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Facing west along Hwy 1 & Hwy 97 approaching Cache Creek. The town lies in the valley at the bottom of this steep grade. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Facing east along Hwy 1 & Hwy 97 from the highway junction at Cache Creek. A dual left turn lane has been provided for westbound traffic turning
southwest towards Hope and Vancouver via Hwy 1. Prior to the completion of the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) during the 1980s, virtually all Vancouver-bound traffic
would have to turn left at this highway junction. The Coquihalla Highway, which connects Kamloops to Hope, is now the primary route to the West Coast since it is
almost 75 km shorter than the route offered by the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1). See an
Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Hwy 1 & Hwy 97C route markers in Cache Creek. These two highways part ways about 4 km south of Cache Creek. Hwy 1 continues southwest towards Hope, while Hwy 97C turns southeast towards Ashcroft, Merritt and Kelowna. See an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers)

Left - Facing south along Hwy 1 & Hwy 97C from the Hwy 97 Junction in Cache Creek. Although Hwy 1 is signed as an east-west highway between Cache Creek and
Hope, it mostly follows a north-south route between the two towns through the Fraser Canyon. See an

Left - Overhead sign marking the turn-off to eastbound Hwy 1 & Hwy 97 to Kamloops in Cache Creek. The South Yellowhead Highway (Hwy 5) is also trailblazed
via Hwy 1 & Hwy 97. Despite the enormous size of Northern British Columbia, it is very sparsely populated. Accordingly, the Cariboo Highway (Hwy 97 North) and the
South Yellowhead Highway (Hwy 5) are only two routes which connect the Cache Creek-Kamloops region with Northern British Columbia. See
an Enlarged Photo Here. (Photograph taken on May 31, 2015 - © Cameron Bevers) Right - Junction of Hwy 1, Hwy 97 & Hwy 97C in Cache Creek, facing north. This critical highway junction unites the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) with the Cariboo Highway (Hwy 97), which is Northern British Columbia's primary north-south route. After a long journey north to Dawson Creek, Hwy 97 ultimately continues northwest towards Yukon and Alaska as the famous Alaska Highway. See an Enlarged Photo Here.
