Left - Autumn colours on Hwy 26 between Collingwood and Thornbury. Near Craigleith, Hwy 26 passes directly below the Blue Mountains, which form a prominent section of the Niagara Escarpment along the southern shore of Georgian Bay. The Blue Mountains are famous for their fine winter ski resorts.

Right - View of Georgian Bay from Hwy 26 near Craigleith, facing east towards Collingwood. Although Hwy 26 closely follows the southern shore of Georgian Bay, there are surprisingly few opportunities to see the lake from the highway. In most places, Hwy 26 is too far from the lake shore to offer any appreciable view.

Left - Facing east along Hwy 26 leaving Collingwood. This section of the highway was designed in such a way that it could be expanded to a four-lane highway in the future without much difficulty. Note the setback of the fire hydrant from the edge of the highway's shoulder.

Right - Facing east along Hwy 26 near Poplar Sideroad at the proposed tie-in with the Hwy 26 "New" Diversion east of Collingwood. Hwy 26 New will be a four-lane divided highway on a new alignment, which will bypass the existing route of Hwy 26 between Collingwood and Wasaga Beach. The new highway will be completed over the next few years and will feature two new roundabouts at Poplar Sideroad and Collingwood Airport Road.

Right - Advance grading for Hwy 26 New between the Fairgrounds Road Overpass and Nottawasaga Sideroad 36-37 in 2009, facing west. The Hwy 26 New project lay dormant for a number of years, after some advance clearing and grading contracts were completed earlier in the decade.

Right - Fairgrounds Road Overpass on Hwy 26 New. For the time being, this will be the only grade separation on the new highway. Structure completed in 2008.

Left - Structure identification number and date stamp (2008) on the Fairgrounds Road Overpass. This bridge abutment has been painted with a sealant. This practice has become rather common on new and rehabilitated provincial highway bridges in recent years. Apparently, this is being done to prolong the service life of the structures.

Left - View of the cleared right-of-way for Hwy 26 New in 2009, facing east from Collingwood Airport Road. Since no granular base was laid for this section of Hwy 26 New during the advance clearing contract, the forest has started to encroach back into the highway right-of-way. A roundabout will be constructed on Hwy 26 New just south of this location in order to provide access to Simcoe Road 92 (Formerly Hwy 92) to Wasaga Beach. Collingwood Airport Road will be relocated further to the south to meet the new roundabout on Hwy 26 New. The existing alignment of Collingwood Airport Road will be closed at Hwy 26 New.

Right - Advance clearing and grading for Hwy 26 New, facing west from Collingwood Airport Road in 2009. In order to improve access to Wasaga Beach, this road will be relocated further to the south where it will tie into Hwy 26 New at the new roundabout. The existing Collingwood Airport Road will be closed to through traffic.

Right - The traffic signal heads at the junction of Hwy 26 and Hwy 92 are affixed to overhead cables. Cable-mounted signals are relatively uncommon on provincial highways, except for temporary conditions such as a bridge reconstruction or other roadway improvements where permanent mast-mounted signal heads would be impractical.

Left - Facing east along Collingwood Airport Road towards the Hwy 26 and Hwy 92 Junction in Wasaga Beach. As part of the adjacent Hwy 26 New construction, major changes are proposed for this intersection. Collingwood Airport Road will be realigned further to the south, where it will intersect Hwy 26 New at a roundabout. The existing signalized intersection of Hwy 26 and Hwy 92 shown here will also be converted into a roundabout.

Right - Facing west along Hwy 26 approaching the Hwy 92 Junction in Wasaga Beach. This section of Hwy 26 will be bypassed by a new four-lane highway which is currently under construction a short distance to the south.

Right - Facing east along Hwy 26 towards the proposed tie-in with Hwy 26 New. When the new highway opens to traffic, the existing Hwy 26 will be truncated at a new cul-de-sac at this location. All westbound Hwy 26 traffic wishing to continue to Wasaga Beach will be forced to use the new four-lane highway.

Left - Facing west along Hwy 26 at the proposed tie-in with the Hwy 26 New Diversion south of Wasaga Beach. Hwy 26 New will be a four-lane divided highway on a new alignment, which will bypass the existing Hwy 26 between Wasaga Beach and Collingwood. Note the utility pole realignment at right, which was done in preparation for the new four-lane highway.
